Eye in the Sky: Millennium Seeks to Curb Seaport Traffic with Aerial Tramway

Millennium Partners, the developer behind Boston’s soaring Millennium Tower, is currently in talks with state and local officials in what may be their most innovative project yet. The firm seeks to ease the commute throughout the burgeoning Seaport neighborhood by constructing a gondola system that would transport as many as 15,000 people a day between South Station and the Seaport District. Though it sounds like a whimsical proposal, Millennium has already expressed their willingness to contribute up to $100 million to get the project off the ground.

PABU: Chef Michael Mina Brings Boston a Restaurant for the New Millennium

As the Millennium Tower inches closer to completion with each passing day, more details are beginning to emerge about the businesses set to move in once the building opens next summer and a recent announcement has the Boston restaurant scene buzzing. Millennium Partners, the New York-based developers of the tower, are teaming up with celebrity chef Michael Mina and sushi chef Ken Tominaga to bring an exciting new dining concept to the city. Set to open Fall 2016, PABU is a Japanese-style izakaya that will operate on the first two stories of the Millennium Tower and promises to offer a unique dining experience to Boston foodies.

In Japan, izakayas are typically known as casual, after-work drinking establishments where food is served to accompany the drinks. Encouraging a social atmosphere, a typical izakaya menu is comprised of small plates meant to be shared and ordered continuously throughout the meal. Essentially, izakaya is the Japanese version of Spanish tapas.

Spanning 7,800 square feet, PABU will feature compartmentalized dining spaces, as well as communal tables where patrons may sip sake and socialize. The concept has been very well-received in San Francisco, where PABU consistently ranks among the city’s top restaurants and Mina believes that success will translate nicely to Boston. Like its sister restaurant, PABU (“pub” in Japanese) won’t be limited to small plates as the concept allows for guests to customize their own experiences. Mina also plans to serve a 16-course chef’s tasting menu that will highlight the freshest ingredients available on any given day, with a heavy focus on seafood, which will come from New England’s own waters, as well as the world’s largest fish market—Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market.

Mina is no stranger to working with Millennium Partners; in 2009, the acclaimed chef’s RN74 opened in San Francisco’s Millennium Tower, where he is also a resident. In addition to operating PABU, Mina will also spearhead the residents-only private dining options on the Millennium Tower’s 23,000 square foot Club Level. In addition to the dishes offered at PABU, Mina plans to create an exclusive menu featuring some of the “greatest hits” from his restaurant empire, which currently spans 21 different locations around the world.

Half-Way There: Boston’s Millennium Tower is Rising Above

As Boston’s first luxury residential skyscraper, the Millennium Tower has been the most-anticipated project in a city that is experiencing its biggest development boom in four decades. Since breaking ground in the fall of 2013, the building’s developers, New York-based Millennium Partners, have used promotional materials to convey the promise that, with their project, “the city rises from here.”

With construction scheduled to be completed in just over a year, that promise can be seen from all over the city as the Millennium Tower currently stands at 341-feet—just about half-way to its final height—and can be seen “rising above” its downtown neighbors from points all over the city.

Millennium Tower will feature 442 luxury condominiums, beginning on the tenth floor, with the first seven floors playing host to upscale dining and retail options open to the public. Acting as a buffer between the public and private spheres of the building will be The Club, described as a “one-of-a-kind environment of casual luxury, perfect for socializing, relaxing and meeting.” The Club at Millennium Tower will offer residents a number of unrivaled amenities, including an owner’s lounge, screening room, parlor, library, function room, pool, spa, concierge service and the largest residential-only fitness facility.

Millennium Partners have spent more than twenty years perfecting their formula of building luxury properties in “gateway” cities such as Miami, New York and San Francisco. Their reputation, along with Boston’s pent-up demand for luxury condos, have contributed to a massively-successful pre-sale with more than 75% of the units already under contract – to the tune of $650 million.

When Millennium Tower opens next year, it will stand as the third-tallest building in Boston, with only the Prudential Tower and the Hancock Building soaring above. That is, until 2017 when the 700-foot tall Four Seasons Tower, located near the Christian Science Plaza, is scheduled to open. With several more towers in various stages of development, the  promise of the city rising is well on its way to coming true.

What’s Happening With Downtown Crossing

Downtown Crossing used to be a hot and happening place in Boston. It was a shopping mecca, which helped lure the commerce. Because many of the shopping venues that used to exist in the area have disappeared over time, Downtown has been fighting it’s way back into the limelight…especially since it lost the popular Filene’s Basement in 2008. (That name always intrigued me because it made me think of Feline, and I couldn’t fathom who would want a basement full of cats.)

Boston’s been a bit anxious and frustrated about the removal of  Filene’s because it caused a large abandoned vacant space just waiting for some sort of activity. Well the exciting news is that the wait is now over and a glorious glass skyscraper designed by the prestigious Millennium Partners is set to replace the previous basement-of-cats department store site downtown. The building will bring new life to the downtown area, reinvigorating the city’s scene.

Millennium is working in tandem with Vornado Realty Trust, who will be participating as a passive investor in the project. By fall of 2013, they will have constructed an additional residential complex titled the Millennium Place on the corner of Washington and Avery Streets. The building will be about 55 stories high, a mix of apartments and condos, 230,000 sq ft of retail stores, 200,000 sq ft of office spaces and 525 underground parking spaces.

Millennium Partners develops mixed use luxury properties like hotels, condos, spa/fitness facilities and office spaces, in big cities like San Francisco, New York and Boston. They  work to convert ordinary properties into an extraordinary ones.  Because of their high profile, Millennium is waiting for the Boston Redevelopment Authority to give the green light  to start construction by the end of this year.
