Rebuilding Work Commences on Fire-Ravaged Waltham Development

This week, developers Daiwa House and Lincoln Property have commenced a rebuilding initiative on Downtown Waltham’s luxury residential development, The Edison on the Charles. The 10-alarm fire, which spread across five buildings along Elm Street, left the complex disintegrated to rubble.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time, fire safety advocates voiced that the wood used to construct the building was susceptible to this type of damage. “It’s like a box of matches because it’s all unprotected wood. It fails rapidly which means you have the collapse of the building fairly quickly,” claimed Chief David Mottor, president of Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts. Since the building had no smoke detectors or sprinkler systems yet installed, it wasn’t possible to alert firefighters to stop the flames early on.

Developers of the project seek to rise the building from the ashes. John Noone, Executive Vice President of Lincoln Cooper Street LLC’s Northeast region plans for cleanup of the demolished structures to commence next week, with construction of the development’s five buildings starting after. “We’ve received our insurance proceeds and we’re going to proceed and rebuild exactly the same project, in the same location, with all the benefits that the city of Waltham is going to attain from this development”, Noone remarked.

The Edison on the Charles will feature 264 residential apartments consisting of four studios, 174 one-bedroom residences and 86 two-bedroom residences. Taking advantage of its location along Cooper street, the development is conveniently located along the bank of the Charles River with easy access to the Greenway and several acclaimed shops, restaurants and museums. Just down the street, the Waltham train station will whisk residents to more Boston excitement. Interstates 90 and 95/128 are a short drive from the project. Luxury amenities at The Edison on the Charles will include garage parking, a state-of-the-art fitness center, outdoor communal space with a swimming pool, and a resident lounge. While the damage has been a significant setback, developers Daiwa House and Lincoln Property are looking forward to delivering much-needed residential space to the growing neighborhood.
