This week, Mayor Martin J. Walsh joined Governor Charlie Baker, local elected officials and the EDENS development team in South Bay’s AMC theater to celebrate the raise of over $1.2 million for infrastructure expansion at Dorchester‘s South Bay Town Center.
Funding the South Bay Town Center
The Massworks Infrastructure Program provides financing for municipalities seeking public infrastructure funding to support economic development and job creation.
“The Massworks funding granted to EDENS for the South Bay expansion project for infrastructure improvements will connect Dorchester, South Boston, Roxbury and the South End, enhance public safety and create new economic opportunities for our community,” reflects City Councilor Frank Baker. “What used to be considered a no man’s land will now be a crossroads of four neighborhoods. I am grateful for the partnership we have with Governor Baker, State Representative Nick Collins, and our State delegation for working with us to see this development come to fruition.”
Their funding of the South Bay Town Center project will go towards the creation of a new surface road to Enterprise street, new utility connections, and new sidewalk and landscaping improvements to Massachusetts Avenue. Their overall goal is to enhance public safety, pedestrian connectivity and traffic circulation.
“I want to thank the State and the Massworks Infrastructure Program for their support of the South Bay expansion project and others across the city that will help transform these areas into vibrant center of activity,” proclaims Mayor Walsh. “These funds will make way for many important benefits in our neighborhoods from South Boston to Mattapan, and I look forward to bringing continued economic growth throughout all of Boston.”
About the Development
The redevelopment project, approved by the Boston Planning & Development Agency in 2016, will graciously transform a section of the South Bay Center shopping area in Dorchester. The new project will introduce 475 market and affordable rate apartment homes with approximately 90,000 square-feet of gross floor area for hotel uses.
There will be a total of 1,095 structured and surface parking spaces throughout the center.
The redevelopment will provide for the construction of new transit-oriented commercial and residential space, attracting more workers and visitors to the area and increasing diversity of the housing stock through the introduction of 475 new residential units. Further, the space will improve the urban design characteristics of the area by creating a neighborhood center in Dorchester.
